COVID-19 Update: Staying Safe, & Volunteer Opportunities

Members of IBEW Local 11,

Just an update on how things are progressing during these trying times regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Governor of California has issued a “stay at home” order but has excluded construction workers and deemed them as “essential” to the safety and wellbeing for the State of California. This decision was based on the knowledge that our workers are the best trained and follow safe practices by being aware of the hazards and wearing personal protective equipment to protect them from injury.

This pandemic creates additional requirements to slow the spread of the virus by demanding “social distancing” and deliberate hand washing. For rest periods and lunches, there should be no group gatherings. If you are sick or show any symptoms, stay at home. Same thing if you feel uncomfortable going to work. The International Union and National NECA have agreed to specific protections for you if you decide it is unsafe for you to work. Look to the website of the Local Union for these agreements.

The government and job site owners are monitoring daily the adherence of safe practices to ensure the safety of the general public. Please follow the rules to protect yourself, your family and fellow sisters and brothers on the job. I, as well as most staff and clerical, are still on the job keeping the Local Union functioning. Thank you to these employees’ selfless acts to represent you and keep the wheels turning.

We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Mayor’s Task Force in the City of Los Angeles. If you have any time to donate, let your union office know. Also, this Friday, volunteers are needed to hand out food baskets to out of work union members. This event is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. Assembly time will follow and be at the Electrical Training Institute at 6023 S. Garfield Ave. Commerce, California. 90040.

Thank you for your perseverance through these troubling times.

Joël Barton
Business Manager / Financial Secretary
