Local 11 celebrates diversity of leadership as new era begins

By Robert Fulton

The officers and members of the Executive Board and Examining Board of IBEW Local 11 were sworn in during the General Membership meeting on July 18 at the Electrical Training Institute.

Outgoing president Rusty Roten led the proceedings as the new leadership recited the oath in front of friends, family and their union brothers and sisters.

Business Manager Robert Corona was elected to his first full term after being appointed to the position following the departure of Joel Barton.

New president Alton Wilkerson spoke to the diversity of IBEW 11 leadership. The Business Manager and President are both people of color, a first for the local, as well as for many others in leadership.

“It’s an honor to be in this position,” said an emotional Wilkerson in his opening statement as President. His remarks were met by wide applause from the meeting attendees.

Vice President Kelly Oliver, Treasurer Gary Tomlin, and Recording Secretary Irene Valenzuela round out the officer positions.

The Executive Board includes Chairman John Harriel, Jr., Gus Alfaro, Armando Gutierrez, Anthony V. Hadjimarkos, Shawn McDonald, Michael Hawkins and Davion Darden.

The Examining Board includes Luis Corona, Gilbert G. Ortiz III, Myra D. Hildreth, Shan Hicksonbottom and Cris Rodriguez.
