HISTORY OF LOCAL 11

In 1942 Local Unions: 83 (Los Angeles), 711 (Wilmington), 1154 (Santa Monica), 691 (Burbank), 418 (Pasadena), and 608 (Pomona) were amalgamated to form Local Union B-ll. Later recognized as Local 11, Los Angeles. The combination of the six Local Unions, had a total membership of 2,136. The wage scale was $1.50 per hour, with no fringes.

At the height of the war effort the membership climbed to 15,000. At the cessation of hostilities construction work slowed and most of the workers returned to their former trades. The membership of Local 11 dropped to 5,800 in 1946. Today we maintain a membership over 6000.

In 1951 the International Office separated the manufacturing workers from Local Union 11 and Local 1710 was chartered for members not employed in the construction field.

1964 also saw the implementation of the Local Union 11 Pension Plan. Today, the benefits from our Pension Plan make it possible for our members to realize the luxury of retirement at an age when they can still look forward to many years of relaxation in comfort.

Retirees Club was formed in 1968 under Charlie Walker, and today Local 11's Retirees Club is one of the most active in the Nation.

Local 11's Navy Yard Unit was transferred to Local 2293 on November 1, 1969.

In 1970 there was a transfer of all maintenance workmen to the newly chartered Local Union 2295.

In 1981 Local 11 had its only strike.

Local 11's first President was George Kung, followed by J. W. Gromme, James Murray, Webb Green, Charlie Walker, John Lawson, Howard Jones, Carl Hietala, Steve Harrington, Homer Lee, Kim Craft, Ted Clinton and Dean Todd.
