COVID-19 Update

Sisters and Brothers,

This notice hopes to give you an update and some assurances to alleviate the fears and concerns regarding the outbreak of Covid-19. On Friday, March 13, 2020, the office of the president issued a proclamation which declared a national emergency. This declaration provides some relief and instructs federal resources to all citizens. Prior to this, the State of California through executive order of Governor Gavin Newsom, directed temporary relief for those affected by the virus and otherwise seeking to self-quarantine as a result. As of today, all local union offices and the Electrical Training Institute remain open. If you have any questions, please call the appropriate entity for more information. This situation remains fluid as there are changes and directives every day. The general meeting is still scheduled this Thursday, but all Unit and District meetings are cancelled until April.

The Employment Development Department has relaxed its rules for benefits and included payments if you are unable to work due to having or been exposed to Covid-19. Out of work employees may file a disability insurance claim. In certain instances, unemployment benefits may be available. Please go to the EDD website for further information. Included is a graph provided by the Labor & Workforce Development Agency.
I am not aware of any jobsites shutting down but will confide with the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association for any updates. What you can do to protect yourself is to always use your Personal Protective Equipment. Most jobs require eye protection, hand protection and all other appropriate PPE. Wash your hands frequently, don’t touch your face and don’t come to work if you feel ill. This will provide some level of protection from exposure to the Covid-19 virus.

I remain confident we will get through this and will continue to update you as needed.

Fraternally,

Joel Barton
